History of Camp McCoy
Camp McCoy began as a Catholic church camp in the 1950’s, supported by the Knights of Columbus. It was named for Monsignor McCoy, a Medicine Hat priest and teacher who dedicated his life to fostering youth. In 1962, the Camp McCoy Society was formed with the Knights of Columbus providing financial support and sponsorship. Camp McCoy continued to offer a very rustic camp experience, with campers housed in tents and a small mess hall as the only shelter during times of inclement weather. Despite these primitive conditions, many “old” campers recall with great fondness their summers at camp and have remained heavily involved with camp to this day. Many have had their own children and grandchildren attend Camp McCoy. In the 1970’s and 80’s, cabins were constructed, which certainly improved conditions for campers, and in 2008 a beautiful chalet-style hall was built to replace the old mess hall. Progress continues at Camp McCoy with plans to replace older buildings, construct a new cabin, and other grounds improvements. Camp McCoy is supported by volunteers, donations, fundraising, and the local Knights Of Columbus councils. In 2012 the Board of Directors voted to stop operating a summer youth camp due to mounting regulations and instead rent Camp McCoy to youth groups. All groups are welcome to bring their children to Camp McCoy and enjoy a summer camp experience.
