Habitat for Humanity is an independent, charitable, faith-based housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing by building homes in partnership with families in need. We build simple, decent, and affordable houses and provide interest-free mortgages to families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own home. The Habitat program is about home ownership and providing a long-term solution designed to break the poverty cycle. With the help of partner families, Habitat constructs proper houses for homeowners. We do this through tax-deductible donations of both materials and charitable financial donations, as well as with hands-on volunteer labour. Our homes are built almost completely by volunteers using building materials, land and money donated by individuals, businesses, service clubs, foundations, and faith communities. The Habitat houses are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages, and sold to partner families without profit. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses. In addition to mortgage payments, each homeowner reinvests back into Habitat hundreds of hours of their own labour. This "sweat equity" is invested into the building of their house, as well of the houses of others, continuing the "Fund for Humanity" which builds future Habitat homes.
